CVG Airport

Cincinnati/Northern KY International Airport

Terminal, Passenger Tunnel and Concourse A

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is the leading airport in the Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky region. When the airport decided to renovate its decade's old terminal, it looked for a design that would connect the airport to the region, provide visual delight for travelers, and communicate the essence of what makes the region unique.

To inspire the design, the airport partnered with The Story Project from Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber's Agenda 360. The Story Project engaged key community shareholders to develop a master narrative about the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region and identified key themes that, when woven together, craft a powerful story describing the region.

Taking input from The Story Project, the new terminal design at CVG reflects the beautiful hills, valleys, woodlands, streams, and the very important river that connects the region. Concourse A and the tunnel features design elements that hometown air travelers will proudly recognize, while giving out-of-town travelers a positive impression of the region. This includes Rolling on the River, an updatable public photo exhibit. To celebrate the region's heritage, CVG's historic mosaic tile murals were installed throughout the airport. Careful consideration was given to the placement of each mural, weighing such details as color coordination and lighting. Web content was placed on the CVG site to lead visitors to the mosaics and highlight their history. The mosaics create an imposing sight that delights and impresses millions of visitors annually.

As all the design elements flow together, they form a rich, dynamic experience, which celebrates the region's past, embraces the future, and powerfully communicates the sense of place that is the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region.
